Ocean Day

Japan’s relationship with the surrounding sea has always been particularly important. One needs only to look at the fare at our Japanese restaurant in Seattle to see the strong presence that the ocean’s bounty has in the country’s most popular culinary traditions. With this in mind, it can hardly come as a surprise that the nation should devote a special holiday to celebrate the marine world.

Umi no Hi, translated as Ocean Day, Sea Day, or occasionally Marine Day, is celebrated on the third Monday of every July. The people of Japan will use the occasion to give thanks for the ocean and everything it has given them. Many will visit the beach to enjoy the sea in style. Consider celebrating Ocean Day for yourself at I Love Sushi with a few of your own Japanese favorites!
